Update (04/20/2018): We've updated this article with details on the OnePlus 6 glass design, white colorway, Avengers Infinity War edition, and more.
OnePlus made its name creating beautiful phones with terrific specs, sold for a fraction of the cost of other major flagships. The upcoming OnePlus 6 should continue that trend, but what will it look like? How much will it cost?
Let's take a look at the latest rumors.
Note: This post will be updated regularly as we take a closer look at the latest rumors surrounding OnePlus' upcoming OnePlus 6 smartphone.
OnePlus 6: Name and release date
The nitty-gritty
- OnePlus has confirmed the phone will be called the OnePlus 6.
- A launch event is scheduled for May 17 in London, U.K., and India on May 18.
OnePlus threw a bit of a curve ball a year ago when it skipped over the number four in its device naming trend. The OnePlus 3 was followed up with the OnePlus 3T, followed by the OnePlus 5. It turns out, the number four is considered unlucky in China, so the Chinese company skipped it.
There was no evidence suggesting OnePlus would skip over the number six too, and, as expected, the official launch invites have confirmed that the device will indeed be called the OnePlus 6.
The OEM also hinted before that the phone would be called the OnePlus 6 in a tweet with the rather unsubtle caption "6et ready!". Going along with OnePlus' model number trends, the OnePlus 6 will likely be given the model number A6000.

We also know OnePlus is not working on a successor to the OnePlus X (though many want one) so the chances of the next phone being something like a OnePlus X2 are highly unlikely.
The chances of the next phone being something like a OnePlus X2 are highly unlikely.
As for release date, the rumor mill started churning awfully early in the year this time around. OnePlus' trend had been to release a new entry in the line, five months later update it with a "T" model, then release a new entry seven months after that. The OnePlus 3 came out in June 2016, and the OnePlus 3T dropped in November that same year. The OnePlus 5 came out in June 2017, and the OnePlus 5T dropped in November 2017.
OnePlus is switching it up this year, however, with the OnePlus 6 global launch penciled in for May 17 at an event in London, U.K. The Chinese OEM will then take its latest flagship to India a day later for an event in Mumbai.
It seems likely that OnePlus will want to get the device into customers' hands as soon as possible, meaning a retail date is expected to follow very shortly after the grand reveal.
OnePlus 6: Specs and features
The nitty-gritty
- The OnePlus 6 will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 SoC.
- OnePlus is teasing that this is the OEM's first officially waterproof phone.
At the end of February this year, a pair of leaked images purportedly of the OnePlus 6 featured two notable design features: a glass back and a "notch" akin to the iPhone X:
We'll get to notch in the next section, but its worth noting that there were some major questions marks over the glass design, after all, the only OnePlus device to feature a glass back was the OnePlus X.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau put the speculation to bed in a lengthy, 1,100-word essay on the history and process of OnePlus' design. In addition to a whole host of interesting information surrounding the company's design ethos, Lau also confirmed that its next flagship will sport a glass back that will communicate a "transparent, bright, and pure feeling."
While there will no doubt be concerns that the new materials will lead to an easily-breakable device with a slippery back, it does open the door to possible wireless charging support. OnePlus hasn't offered any concrete hints that this is the case, however, so don't get your hopes up.
The Dash Charge feature on all OnePlus devices since the OnePlus 3, which promises "a day's power in half an hour," is one of the company's most-loved and distinctive features, so it's safe to expect it'll be included with the OnePlus 6.
One possible feature that could be a first for the Chinese company is waterproofing. OnePlus' social channels shared a short clip of falling water alongside the following caption: "Don't you just hate it when you have to stop using your phone when it rains? So do we".
OnePlus has previously eschewed the industry trend of submitting its devices to IP rating tests. This has previously led to some speculation that the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T are both at least semi-water resistant but simply lack official ratings. It seems that OnePlus is looking to erase any suspicions with the OnePlus 6.
The OnePlus 6 will feature the latest Qualcomm chipset, the Snapdragon 845. Each iteration of OnePlus' devices have featured the most recent Qualcomm chipset, so it was pretty much a given, but Lau has confirmed the SoC, while also suggesting that it will feature 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of onboard storage.

OnePlus has already started boasting that the phone will offer "the speed you need", so it's fair to assume the OnePlus 6 will be a general powerhouse just like its predecessor, and with those purported specs it's not hard to see why.
In fact, some leaked benchmark scores point to the phone being incredibly fast; it's possible it will have an AnTuTu score of 276,510, making it actually the fastest phone we know of at the moment. Even the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S falls behind with a purported AnTuTu score of 273,741:
OnePlus has done shady things in the past with its benchmark scores, so that score is, at the moment, highly suspect.
Finally, a leaked Wi-Fi certification certificate suggests that the OnePlus 6 will run a version of OxygenOS based on Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

OnePlus 6: Design
The Verge
The nitty-gritty
- In a move that has caused plenty of controversy, OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will feature a display notch akin to the iPhone X.
- Leaked images show a vertical dual-camera, rear fingerprint reader, a patterned back cover, and a returning 3.5mm headphone jack.
Love it or hate it, the OnePlus 6 will feature a notch at the top of its all-screen display like the iPhone X. All of the leaked images mentioned in the previous section show a device with a notch, but if that's not enough proof, look no further than the words of OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei.
In an interview that went down with OnePlus fans like a lead balloon, co-founder Carl Pei confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will adopt the notch to offer more display real estate.
In an interview that went down with OnePlus fans like a lead balloon, Pei confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will adopt the notch to offer more display real estate.
He shared the exact dimensions of the device's cutout (19.616 x 7.687mm), released an official image of OnePlus 6's bezel-free forehead (above), and directed an ill-judged smackdown at notch-dissenters: "learn to love the notch."
While the company isn't backpedaling on its decision, Pete Lau later took to OnePlus' own forums to clarify the comments and perform some much-needed PR damage control.
Lau noted that the OnePlus 6 needed a display that met the firm's rigorous testing standards while also being readily available for high production volumes. The best fit just so happened to have a notch. Lau also argued that more experimental alternatives to the notch, such as the Vivo Apex's pop-up selfie camera, are not currently viable for a mainstream release.
We do know, however, that the OnePlus 6 will feature a compatibility mode that will let users black out the sides of the notch when in landscape mode while using apps.
OnePlus says it has successfully tested the functionality with 1,000 popular Play Store apps. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether there will be a notch toggle like the one Huawei introduced with the P20 series.
Moving away from the notch, it's incredibly likely that the OnePlus 6 will feature a fingerprint scanner on the back, underneath a dual-camera. The general rumor mill has pegged the dual-lens setup as a 16MP and 20MP combo, which would match the megapixel count found on the OnePlus 5T, although nothing concrete has emerged just yet.
What we do have are some photos (below) shared by Pete Lau that, judging by the metadata, appear to have been taken on a OnePlus 6. They look pretty good on the whole but it's tricky to judge the quality as the images were shared on social media which means they've been heavily compressed.
OnePlus included Face Unlock technology to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T (and then eventually to the 3/3T), but all of the leaked images so far have included an oval-shaped fingerprint sensor that should complement the biometric security.
There had been some speculation that the Oppo R15 would act as a rough template for the OnePlus 6 design. Oppo is OnePlus' parent company, and prior OnePlus devices have borrowed heavily from its designs. Judging by an alleged OnePlus 6 image shared by reputed leaker Evan Blass, however, the two differ in a number of significant ways.
The image (below) shows the rear of the phone with a wood-patterned finish around a metal frame. The look is a clear callback to the original OnePlus One's interchangeable backplates and the much-loved bamboo cover, although it seems likely that this is a brushed effect rather than an actual wood panel.
If legit, the image confirms that OnePlus is standing by the traditional headphone jack that so many OEMs have jettisoned by now. A vertical dual-camera module, fingerprint sensor, and a USB-C port can also be spotted.
By cross-referencing the infamous notch image with another official teaser, we can also confirm that the notification slider has been moved to the right side of the device.
In terms of color variants, so far we've seen the black/gray finish with a patterned effect and a more traditional black covered in glass in hands-on leaks and promotional teasers. Those looking for something a bit brighter will be delighted to hear that a third, white option is also on the way.
The white colorway was revealed in an official 'first look' video from OnePlus where fans were filmed reacting to the devices in person. OnePlus has sneakily blurred the actual handsets in the footage, but there's unmistakably a white phone in there.
Finally, OnePlus is readying a special edition variant of the OnePlus 6 to celebrate the release of Marvel/Disney's much-anticipated Hollywood blockbuster, Avengers: Infinity War. It is likely to resemble the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition, only this time with Avengers-themed branding, and will once again be exclusive to India.
The 'Infinity War' OnePlus 6 is expected to come with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. An official teaser video for the device has confirmed that the phone will have a textured back, similar to the carbon fiber Karbon case that the company created for previous OnePlus phones, and will be called the OnePlus 6 x Marvel Avengers Limited Edition.
OnePlus 6: Price
The nitty-gritty
- Prices have increased every year since the OnePlus One, if you ignore the anomaly of the OnePlus X. It stands to reason that the OnePlus 6 could be the first OnePlus device to launch above $500.
OnePlus is known for devices with flagship specs at much lower price points, so we can likely expect the OnePlus 6 to continue that philosophy. However, how much cheaper will it be?
With every new iteration of OnePlus devices, the launch price for the base model has gone up.
Every new iteration of OnePlus's devices (aside from the OnePlus X) have increased in price. Check it out:
- $299 – OnePlus One
- $329 – OnePlus 2
- $399 – OnePlus 3
- $439 – OnePlus 3T
- $479 – OnePlus 5
- $499 – OnePlus 5T
If the trend stays, the OnePlus 6 will probably be the company's first phone to launch above $500.
Even with a price increase, many flagships are creeping ever-closer to the $1000 mark, so a sub-$600 device with flagship specs would still be quite a bit cheaper. The days of OnePlus being a "bargain" might be coming to an end with the release of the OnePlus 6, but that doesn't mean it won't still be a good deal.
These are all the rumors about the OnePlus 6 we have come across so far. We'll update this page as we hear more.
Meanwhile, let us know your thoughts on the possibilities of the next OnePlus device. Are you still on team OnePlus, or are the new players in the mid-range market doing it better?
