Given the similarities between the Honor 10 and the OnePlus 6, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the headline was a rhetorical question. It isn't.
These two flagships are competing in the same market, and are evenly matched in many respects. However, if what you're looking for in your next smartphone is innovation, the Honor 10 wins hands-down. Here's why.
AI photography
Glancing at the hardware, the cameras on these two smartphones are not hugely dissimilar. On the rear the Honor 10 has a 24MP and 16MP dual-lens camera, while the OnePlus 6 sports a 20MP and 16MP dual setup. On the front the Honor 10 has a 24MP selfie camera compared to the 16MP snapper of the OnePlus 6.
These might sound similar on-paper, but it's the innovative technology which really separates the two here. Unless you're a professional photographer, getting the settings right for your shots is at best time-consuming, and at worst actually quite tricky. The Honor 10 kicks it up a level with AI support for your photos. Every time you shoot, the camera settings are automatically optimized to take a great picture.
The AI technology in the Honor 10 works by allowing the camera to recognize 500+ scenarios from 22 categories in real-time. It can pinpoint the outlines of various surrounding objects, like the sky, plants, people or even a waterfall, and identify their locations instantly.
This feature is supported by the industry-first Semantic Image Segmentation technology, which allows the Honor 10 to identify multiple objects in a single image. Scene-specific parameters are automatically applied to each photo in real-time when taking a picture, making every photo you take a professional shot with just one click. OnePlus 6 users will have to figure out the optimum settings themselves.
By the way, the Honor 10 is a touch smaller and lighter than the OnePlus 6. That means a slightly smaller display, but makes the phone easier to operate one-handed when it's time for selfies.
Design Innovation
The design of the Honor 10 is something to behold. The back is made up of 15 layers of 3D glass, providing a colorful radiance from every angle. This 'aurora glass' is a result of world-class industrial techniques and sophisticated engineering processes that require the utmost precision and delicacy.
This effect is complemented by two iconic new colors specially created at The Paris Aesthetics Center: Phantom Blue and Phantom Green. If these vibrant choices are too flashy for you, the Honor 10 is also available in Midnight Black and Phantom Grey. Using a specialist design facility to create unique colors shows just how much consideration has gone in to the design of this smartphone.
The OnePlus 6 is available in three colours: Mirror black, black and white. If your phone is a lifestyle choice, then the choice here is simple.
Furthermore, the Honor 10 boasts a 19:9 bezel-less display and 86 percent screen-to-body ratio whilst keeping the fingerprint scanner up front. It achieves this by embodying an industry-first ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the glass. While the display only extends down to the sensor, the glass continues to the edge providing a flush, minimalist look.
As with many flagships, the OnePlus 6 has thrown the fingerprint scanner around the back, to the dismay of those who neither care to lean forward nor pick up their phone if they just want to quickly check an incoming message.
And the winner is….
When it comes to camera and design innovation, the Honor 10 clearly stands out. Both phones might have similar internals, but the Honor 10 has enough X factor to help it stand out in the crowd.
