The V40 ThinQ (Storm) could be LG’s fourth flagship phone of 2018

  • LG V40 ThinQ name revealed by leaker Evan Blass.
  • The device, codenamed "Storm", could launch after the G7 ThinQ and V35 ThinQ in late summer/early fall.
  • With the V30s ThinQ fresh in the memory and two more flagships reportedly on the way, is this one flagship too many?

LG apparently wasn't kidding when it said it was abandoning a strict yearly product cycle. With the LG G7 ThinQ launch just around the corner and reports that a device called the LG V35 ThinQ is also in the works, you might be surprised to hear that the South Korean OEM is working on yet another marquee device due later this year.

According to reputable leaker Evan Blass, this mysterious third device is the LG V40 ThinQ and it will launch in late summer/early fall. The phone — reportedly codenamed "Storm" — would follow the imminent release of the G7 ThinQ (Neo/Judy) and the V35 ThinQ (Emma), with the latter expected to debut shortly after the G7 breaks cover in New York on May 2.

Editor's Pick

What exactly the V40 ThinQ will offer is completely up in the air at this point. Judging by the name alone, we can speculate that it will be the 'true' successor to the LG V30 and that it will feature AI-centric features — most likely for photography — based on the use of LG's ThinQ brand.

A number of specs for the LG V35 ThinQ leaked just over a week ago, although, unlike the G7 ThinQ, we've yet to see any images of the proposed device in renders or in the wild.

Having two V-series devices launch so close to each other in a single year would certainly fit into LG's refreshed, variant-heavy modus operandi. Following lackluster sales for the LG G6 and severe losses from the electronics giant's mobile division, the company announced that it would no longer look to compete with other OEMs with cyclical releases and instead forge its own path.

At MWC 2018, LG eschewed expectation and unveiled a new V30 variant, the LG V30S ThinQ. The company had historically used the Barcelona event as a platform to launch its G-series flagships.

With three more flagship phones now potentially on the horizon, there will perhaps be some (myself included) questioning whether LG is going overboard with its new strategy. Of course, LG may decide to not release all of the models internationally, but that doesn't change the fact that the development team may be spread a little thin with so many flagship devices in the pipeline.

We'll keep an eye open for any more details regarding either the V35 ThinQ or the V40 ThinQ, but for now, be sure to let us know your thoughts on LG's possibly expanding portfolio in the comments.
