Metal designs, thinner profiles and pleasant aesthetics have surged in the smartphone market, but they come with a sacrifice some of you may not be willing to live with. Removable batteries have become a dying breed.

Even if battery life is generally improving, being able to carry extra batteries and swapping them to your liking is an advantage that is hard to give up. In an industry in which all the best phones tend to sport a unibody design, where are the handsets that still offer the versatility of a removable battery? Unfortunately, this leaves us with a pretty small selection of good smartphones with a removable battery. In fact there isn't a single newer flagship device, the closest to making that cut is the nearly two year old LG V20.

The LG V20 may be nearly two years old, but it's still one heck of a device. It has a a big Quad HD display, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 processor, plenty of RAM and on-board storage, dual 16 MP rear-facing cameras, and a removable 3,200 mAh battery. Of course, the unique Second Screen makes a return, along with the addition of Quad DAC, military standard durability, and it's already running Android 7.0 Nougat.

Moto E4

This handset continues the Moto tradition of bringing solid performance for as little money as possible.

The Moto E4 is an Android 7.1 Nougat handset that won't break the bank. The 5-inch phone has a plastic body, and inside it has the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor, with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz. The display has a 1,280 x 720 resolution, and a decent amount of memory, with 2 GB of RAM. It has 16 GB of onboard storage, with a microSD card slot for adding up to 128 GB of additional storage.

The front-facing camera is pretty good at 5 MP, while the rear camera has 8 MP, with features like autofocus, a four-piece composite lens, and LED flash. The Moto E4 has a removable 2,800 mAh battery that is supposed to offer a full day's worth of use on a single charge. It even has a fingerprint sensor, which is something most new phones that are priced under $100 don't have.

Overall, the Moto E4 won't win any performance or design awards, but it manages to pack in some decent hardware specs in a package with a near rock-bottom price tag.

Nokia 1

HMD Global has been releasing lots of smartphones over the past year or so with the Nokia brand. One of the newest is the Nokia 1. It has a 4.5-inch display with an 854 x 450 resolution, a 5MP primary camera, a quad-core 1.1GHz MediaTek MT6737 chipset, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, and, yes, a removable battery with the size of 2,150mAh.

This is also the first Nokia branded phone to support the Android Go platform, which are designed to be low cost handsets with stripped down versions of Android apps. The Nokia 1, like all Android Go phones, are made to work with carriers that may not have a fast cellular wireless collection. It's currently available in the UK and India, via Amazon, for about $100 (US).
