5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly

Android Apps Weekly featured image
Welcome to the 240th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the big headlines from the last week:

  • We saw two apps lose support this week. The first is Swiftmoji, a keyboard from the makers of SwiftKey. The app remains on Google Play but will get no more updates. SwiftKey has most of the same features as Swiftmoji anyway. Thus, there is no need to maintain both apps. The other is OperaVPN. It was a totally free VPN app with some questionable logging policies. Opera didn't provide a reason for OperaVPN's shutdown. However, they do recommend SurfEasy VPN instead.
  • Russia really hates Telegram and every platform where it's available. They demanded that APK Mirror remove the app. Additionally, they want it removed from Google Play and Apple's App Store. Neither company has officially responded yet. We expect this one to get worse before it gets better. This all stemmed from Telegram refusing Russian authorities when they wanted access to Telegram's encryption keys. Sometimes privacy pays a price, at least if you live in Russia. This is an ongoing story so stay tuned for more updates!
  • PUBG Mobile had a pretty big week. It received an update with a less intense arcade mode as well as a Training Grounds mode. Arcade Mode lowers the game size from 100 players to 24 players. Training Grounds lets you demo weapons and vehicles. The update should be headed to players right now. It also lost its coveted number one spot in Google Play to a silly little viral bottle flipping game proving once and for all that you can't predict this stuff no matter how hard you try.
  • PlatinumGames, makers of NieR: Automata (a true masterpiece), Bayonetta, and other excellent games, are working on a new mobile game. World of Demons is a Samurai hack-and-slash title without a ton of information available yet. The website has no game play videos or anything like that yet. However, the game is out for pre-registration right now. PlatinumGames does fairly outstanding action games. We imagine they'll do good with mobile as well.
  • Google made headlines this week with their new Chat app. So here's what's happening. In the background, Google has carriers all over the place implementing RCS messaging. Their text app, Android Messages, uses RCS for better texting. This could make Chat the actual iMessage of Android if implemented properly. It's not as close as we would want yet, obviously. However, Google believes in this vision enough to put Google Allo on hold for the time being. Hit the link to learn more!

Destiny Warfare

Price: Freemium

Destiny Warfare saw a global release this week. It's a sci-fi, multiplayer FPS game. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see where this game got its inspiration. The game includes various weapons, jet packs, and simple controls (for a shooter, anyway). You don't have to fire the gun, it auto-shoots when you're on a target. It also has multiple online game types as well as custom games, a rarity in this space. We would've liked to have seen controller support (with manual firing), but otherwise this game seems like a decent one for PvP FPS fans.

God of War : Mimir's Vision

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
God of War: Mimir's Vision is actually an app, not a game. It uses ARCore technology to overlay the game's map onto a surface in your general area. You can then move around the map, zoom in, and even learn the lore from various places. It's a fairly simple premise and, like most ARCore apps right now, it feels more like a proof-of-concept than a real, actual product. Still, fans of the series should get a kick out of it. It's also totally free with no ads or in-app purchases.

Returner 77

Price: $4.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Returner 77 is a mystery puzzle game with a sci-fi theme. Aliens attacked our civilization and things go horribly wrong (don't they always). It reminds us a lot of The Room, actually. The puzzles are beautifully animated and somewhat intricate. However, those are the only two elements that these games share. The game goes for $4.99 with no advertising or additional in-app purchases. It has a couple small (and rare) bugs, but most people seem to really enjoy this one.

Internet by Amazon

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
The simply named Internet is a new browser from Amazon. It's not widely available but it has a few decent features. They include a small install size, privacy browsing, and a news feed. However, it still falls far short of what we would expect a good browser to look like. Still, considering that Amazon's other browser is Silk and knowing that Silk is garbage, we can definitively say that this one should be a step up from Silk, at least. The app is free with no in-app purchases. It does contain ads, though.

The Room: Old Sins

Price: $4.99

The Room; Old Sins launched this week. This is going to be a one of the 15 or so best mobile games of the year. It keeps a lot of the stuff that we love about that series. That includes its intricate puzzles, excellent graphics, and its modern features like Google Play Games achievements. However, this one also includes a bit of an exploration element as well as a massive and creepy dollhouse. It also still includes cloud saving like its predecessors. The game runs for $4.99 and it's worth every penny, just like its predecessors.
