Developer Dots, known for its games Dots, Two Dots and Dots & Co, has just teased its fourth game titled Wilds. The teaser comes in the form of a live action video (like the company has made previously) which sees a barefoot man walk through a forest toward a glowing orb.
Though the teaser doesn't feature any content from the game itself, its lead designer David Hohusen spoke to The Verge to provide some hints as to what could be expected from the title.
Wilds is a puzzle-RPG in a similar vein to the developer's previous titles, though it sounds like it will represent the biggest departure from the classic formula. "The Dots mechanic exists in the sense that you will be connecting dots and making squares," Hohusen said, "but beyond that pretty much everything else has changed."
With Wilds, Hohusen said the studio is "Aiming for a game that has a lot more depth to it," than its previous games. "Hopefully to engage a little bit more of a strategic form of gameplay. Since it's a puzzle RPG, we want to lean into this idea that the way you play your game will be different than the way that I play my game. We created a lot of systems that support non-linear gameplay."
I'm stumped as to how exactly the team is going to broaden this gameplay and explore non-linearity — the mechanics of the previous games are pretty rigid — but I can't deny I'm intrigued.
The teaser says the title is coming 2017 (and it will be available on both Android and iOS) but we don't know precisely when. We'll be sure to let you know when we learn more.
