It's that time of the month again. Google has released the latest Android distribution numbers, which means users around the world are able to see just how many people aren't yet running the latest version of Android.
Coming off from a somewhat lackluster month of progress, it looks like the Android Nougat rollout is picking up a bit of steam. According to the latest numbers, 7.1% of all users, coincidentally, are running Android 7.0-7.1.1 Nougat, which is a decent 2.2% increase over last month's numbers.
While 7.1% doesn't seem like a huge amount of users, it actually is… these numbers unfortunately don't move very fast from month to month. Plus, it's worth noting that some of this increase isn't even due to manufacturers updating their phones. The Galaxy S8/S8 Plus and LG G6 – three of the most anticipated devices of the year – were released in April, which means all of those early adopters help account for this Nougat percentage. Still, a handful of OEMs have been rolling out the Nougat update to their devices as of late, such as Samsung and Lenovo.
There's more to this chart than Nougat, though. Oddly enough, Android 6.0 Marshmallow has taken up 31.2% of the Android space for two months in a row. In fact, the same goes for Android 5.0-5.1 Lollipop with 32%.
We start seeing more changes with KitKat and Jelly Bean. Android 4.4 KitKat has dropped from 20% to 18.8% from last month, while Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean has dropped one whole percentage point to 9.1% from last month. Android 4.0.3-4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich also dropped from .9% to .8% this month.
There's one more thing, and it's something we usually never have to talk about. Android Gingerbread, a version that's been out since 2010, has gained a tenth of a percentage point this month. I'm not making this up. Gingerbread is now back at 1%, up from .9% last month. Is that a mistake on Google's part? Did a group of users downgrade a ton of their Android devices from Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason? I have no idea.
