Welcome to the 192nd edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the big headlines from the last week:
- Google Photos had a big week at Google I/O 2017. You can now order actual Photo Books for as little as $9.99. Additionally, the service added Suggested Sharing and Shared Libraries. Those help make sharing photos even easier than it was before. It'll also have support for the newly announced Google Lens project. It can do fun things like remove obstacles from images. Some of the features are rolling out now. Others are coming in the next few weeks or month.
- Google Assistant also had a huge week at Google I/O. For starters, it'll be available for iOS devices in the next week or so. Additionally, support for over half a dozen languages is coming in the near future. It'll also have Google Lens integration to help make things even easier. You can even order food directly from Google Assistant now and shop online. It's going to feel like a completely new experience before next year.
- One of the many big announcements at Google I/O 2017 was Google Play Protect. This is a layer of protection that makes antivirus apps even more unnecessary. It will scan apps on your phone periodically. The goal is to make sure there are no threats. The service will automatically remove threats once detected. It's in the latest Android O beta and will likely also be in the final release.
- Microsoft held their Build 2017 developer conference last week. Their biggest announcement is the inclusion of a new system in their apps. Their ultimate goal is to allow you to use stuff on your Windows 10 PC and then seamlessly pick up where you left off on Android devices, iOS devices, etc. It's really good to see Microsoft adopting cross platform support unlike their competitors.
- Apparently, Nintendo is working on a Legend of Zelda title for mobile. The Wall Street Journal reported the news early last week. According to the report, DeNA will develop the game. That means it'll likely be a freemium title much like Final Fantasy Record Keeper was. As long as it isn't something simple and awful, people will likely enjoy it. There is no current time frame on release right now.

Milkmaid of the Milky Way is an adventure game. You play as a woman named Ruth. For a while, Ruth raises cows out in the country. However, some weird stuff starts to happen that changes the trajectory of her life. It has a story line, puzzles, and simple touch controls. However, it does lack Google Play Games services of any kind. It does only have about two to four hours of game play. Thus, you may not require cloud saving. It may very well be worth what it's going for. At least while it's still on sale.
AMOLED mnml Wallpapers is a wallpapers app. It's made for devices with an AMOLED screen. Each wallpaper has a bunch of black on it since black wallpapers can help save a bit of battery. The app is well designed, quick to use, and has plenty of options. You can also change the download folder, switch between a dark and light theme, and more. The wallpaper selection itself is actually pretty good. They look sharp even on 2K displays. You can also get the app even if you don't have an AMOLED device. The app is free for right now.
Galaxy on Fire 3 - Manticore is a space shooter. You'll ride in a space craft. Your job is to gun down the bad guys. It features huge levels, a free fly mode, and plenty of things to do. There is also upgrades to collect, new areas to unlock, and much more. It's also a gorgeous looking game if that matters. It's a freemium game much like its predecessor. That has irked some people. Additionally, the game has a few bugs. However, we anticipate those getting fixed sooner or later.
Panna bills itself as a cooking app. However, it's more like a cooking platform. It boasts over 400 recipe videos. They are made by real chefs. The purpose is to not only show you new recipes, but also show you cooking techniques. For that, it does well. The app also has a grocery list function, recipe annotations, and more. However, it is a subscription-only service. You can get a 30-day free trial but it's $39.99 per year after that. Whether or not that's worth it is totally up to you. Thankfully, one subscription covers every platform where the app is available.
To the Moon is a story-driven adventure game. You'll play as two doctors. Their goal is to rewrite a man's memories to make him believe that he went to the moon. The game boasts no combat whatsoever. Additionally, the developers state that there is no nonsense, no filler, and no wasting time. It's a refreshingly no-nonsense approach that contrasts vividly with most mobile games. It also comes with simple controls and retro style graphics. The story isn't half bad either. It's a pay-once game with no in-app purchases.
