Update: July 1, 2020 (5:07 PM ET): Sony took to its blog to announce nine new indie games as part of its PlayStation Indie Initiative. Of the nine games announced by the company, four of those games are coming to both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, with the remainder only coming to Sony's previous-generation console.

Sony's PlayStation 5 isn't coming out until the end of the year, but announcements for PS5 games already coming in hot and heavy. We already know that it will be backwards compatible with most of the 4,000+ game PS4 catalog, which should alleviate some of the launch day troubles that plague most consoles.

PlayStation consoles have always been known for their fantastic lineup of exclusive games, and Sony revealed a ton of new game trailers during its June 11 event. Here are all of the upcoming PlayStation 5 games announced so far, plus a few more that we expect to hear more about soon.

Still don't have a PS4? Now's a great time to pick up a PlayStation 4 Slim bundle or 4K-ready PlayStation 4 Pro bundle at a heavy discount!

Confirmed PS5 games

Grand Theft Auto V

During its June 11 game reveal event, Sony showed a trailer for Grand Theft Auto V and announced that an "expanded and enhanced" version of the game would come to the PlayStation 5 in 2021. Sony also announced that anyone who owns the PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V will get a free upgrade to the PS5 version, and that GTA Online will become a standalone game that will be free for three months for all PS5 owners. After that it will free-to-play with a PlayStation Plus membership.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Spider-Man was a major hit on the PS4, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales seeks to continue that on the PS5. Rather than a brand new game, it's a remaster of the original game with substantial new content. It's set for release at the end of 2020, which could make it a PS5 launch game.

Gran Turismo 7

It wouldn't be a PlayStation event without a Gran Turismo game, and Polyphony showed off a new game in the franchise that looks absolutely stunning. It's not a side GT game either, as the title was officially revealed as Gran Turismo 7, the next major game in the long-running racing franchise.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Sony showed off a new game from the fan-favorite Ratchet and Clank franchise. It looks to feature the same intense gameplay fans of the franchise have grown to love over the years. The game is called Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and it adds rift-based teleportation and a new character that looks to be a female Ratchet.

Project Athia

Square Enix announced an upcoming PS5 game called Project Athia. The teaser doesn't tell us much about the game, other than that it was designed exclusively for the PS5 and that it features some impressive graphics and spell casting mechanics.

Stray

The Stray trailer kicks off with a cat walking around a world that's completely inhabited by robots. The cat lets out a meow and we're treated with the title card of the game, Stray, which is coming in 2021.

Returnal

Sony showed off a new shooter called Returnal. In it, the main character crashes on an alien planet and is forced to live a loop of their death over and over. The psychological thriller features some terrifying monsters and a dark world that changes as the game progresses.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sackboy is back in Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The Little Big Planet star is back in his own platformer that doesn't seem to be as focused on designing levels, but rather just on gameplay. The trailer shows off four-player co-op and a highly-interactive world of charming monsters and scenery.

Destruction AllStars

Rocket League and Twisted Metal meet in this new car combat game called Destruction Allstars. The trailer doesn't reveal much, but it does show some wacky character designs and intense action sequences.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

The next PS5 game is the first title from Ember Lab, a small team focused on storytelling and unique visuals. From the brief bits of gameplay in the trailer, Kena: Bridge of Spirits looks like an action-platformer with elements of Pikmin sprinkled in. It's set to be a timed PS5 exclusive, although it will also be available on PC.

Goodbye Volcano High

Goodbye Volcano High is yet another PS5 exclusive game announced at the June 11 event. It takes place in a high school filled with monsters, and it looks to be more of a visual novel-style playable cartoon. It's a nice change of pace from the action-focused PS5 games announced so far, and you can expect it to come out some time in 2021.

Oddworld Soulstorm

Oddworld is back in a big way. Oddworld Soulstorm is the first game in the series since 2014's Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty!, which itself was a remake of the very first game in the series. This new PS5 game is a re-imagining of the second game in the series, Abe's Exoddus, and it will be a PS5 exclusive.

GhostWire: Tokyo

GhostWire: Tokyo was first teased at E3 2019, and we finally got a gameplay reveal at the June 11 event. The supernatural thriller takes place in an alternate Tokyo that's being invaded by otherworldly creatures. The catch is that only you can see them, so it's up to you to exorcise them and save the city.

JETT: The Far Shore

The next PS5 exclusive game is called JETT: The Far Shore, and it's coming at the end of 2020. It looks like a space exploration game where you scout out alien worlds in a side-scrolling rocket.

Godfall

Gearbox is jumping into the mix with a new third-person action game called Godfall. It features Borderlands-style loot mechanics, but with a Dark Souls-like focus on melee combat. The PS5 exclusive is set for release in holiday 2020, so expect it to launch alongside the console itself.

Solar Ash

From Heart Machine, the creators of the beloved Hyper Light Drifter, comes a new PS5 game called Solar Ash. Apart from the unique art style revealed in the trailer, we don't know much about the game, but it's slated for release some time in 2021.

Hitman 3

Agent 47 is back in Hitman 3, which is landing in January 2021. It was revealed to be the last edition in this part of the Hitman series, and the trailer above showed off some impressive gameplay footage. It should feature all the sneaking, blending in, and of course, killing that fans of the franchise have come to expect.

Astro's Playroom

The adorable little robots are back in a new PS5 game called Astro's Playroom. The game is free and basically serves as a tech demo for the controller, but it looks like a cute experience with lots of different activities.

Little Devil Inside

To call Little Devil Inside a weird would be an understatement. The PS5 exclusive was successfully funded on Kickstarter more than five years ago, and now it's finally coming to life. The action RPG is about a college professor who explores paranormal activity in surreal but strangely familiar parts of the world.

NBA 2K21

At the June 11 event Sony also showed off a brief trailer for NBA 2K21. It only showed one player dunking, so it didn't give a feel for what the gameplay will be like when a full squad is on the court, but it definitely showcased the power and potential of next-gen graphics.

Bugsnax

The next trailer kicked off with a cute googly-eyed strawberry which was promptly eaten in front of our eyes by a talking walrus. The game is called Bugsnax, and it's from the creators of Octodad so rest assured that it'll be weird, interesting, and fun. It gives off some serious Viva Piñata vibes, which is a good thing.

Demon's Souls

One of the most exciting reveals of the June 11 event was a remake of 2009's Demon's Souls. The predecessor to Dark Souls laid the groundwork for the rest of the series, and now you can live (and die) through it all again.

Deathloop

Sony also showed a gameplay demonstration of a stylish action game called Deathloop that's all about time loops. Your character has an entire island hunting him, and he has to fight them off while attempting to assassinate eight targets before midnight. It's from Arkane studios, the company responsible for Dishonored, so there's some serious pedigree there.

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil fans got a special treat towards the end of the June 11 event with the reveal of Resident Evil: Village, the eighth entry in the action-horror series. You'll have to wait until 2021 to get your hands on it, but it will be released for other consoles as well.

Horizon Forbidden West

The June 11 event ended with the game we were all hoping to see: Horizon Forbidden West. It seems to pick up where the first game left off, and the trailer showed off new elements like underwater exploration.

Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the best selling games for the PS4, moving more than 10 million copies since it was released in 2017. The main character Aloy has even become a kind of PlayStation brand ambassador, so it's fitting to see a brand new title on the updated hardware. Unfortunately, no launch date was given, so it may be well over a year before this one hits shelves.

Dying Light 2

The open world survival horror game Dying Light came out more than five years ago, and now a follow up is slated to be one of the first PS5 games. Like many next-gen titles, Dying Light 2 will technically be a "cross-generational" title, since it will also be released for the current PS4 and Xbox One consoles.

Still, Dying Light 2's open world will be a great showcase for the powerful new console's capabilities. It's set 15 years after the first game in the series, and features a heavier focus on narrative. Fans will also be happy to learn that Dying Light 2 will also have twice as many parkour moves to help speed your way through the urban apocalypse.

Gods and Monsters

Gods and Monsters was initially scheduled for release in early 2020, but has since been delayed to the next fiscal year. It's one of three confirmed PS5 games from Ubisoft, although it will come out on current-gen consoles as well. Depending on how long it's delayed, it may release simultaneously across generations or be staggered by a few months.

Regardless, Gods and Monsters is a kind of artsy, mythological take on Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Players can quest and explore in an open-world environment that's filled with, well, gods and monsters.

Gothic

THQ Nordic's 2001 action RPG Gothic is a cult classic, even though it never got the international fame and recognition of other Western RPGs like the Elder Scrolls series. Four Gothic games were eventually released, although the last came out nearly a decade ago.

Now, renewed interest (and THQ's acquisition of Gothic IP) has lead to development of a next-gen remake. THQ Nordic has promised to stay as true to the original as possible, so both returning fans and those new to the series will find something to enjoy. There's an hour long "playable teaser" available on Steam, so check that out to get a taste of what's to come.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Andy Serkis truly brought Gollum to life in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but this upcoming PS5 game finally gives him the spotlight. Developer Daedalic Entertainment scored a licensing deal to expand on the Gollum/Smeagol story in a multi-platform game coming out in 2021. The studio is also tapped to create several more games using Tolkien's famed IP.

Staying true to the series, Gollum will feature stealth gameplay and a big focus on the duality between Gollum and Smeagol. At various points in the game, you can choose to make decisions as one or the other. The game will also showcase familiar characters from the series, although Gollum himself won't look the same as he did in Peter Jackson's film renditions.

Outriders

If you're tired of developers milking the same IP for far longer than they should, Outriders might be right up your alley. Not too much has been released about the upcoming PS5 game, but we know it's set on a world called Enoch, where mysterious events have given humanity supernatural powers.

Produced by Square Enix and People Can Fly, Outriders is an ambitious co-op shooter set for Holiday 2020 release on both current and next-gen consoles. That release window might mean it's also a PS5 launch title, although this is yet to be confirmed.

Rainbow Six Quarantine

Rainbow Six Quarantine is yet another confirmed PS5 game from Ubisoft, although it too has been delayed to the 2021 fiscal year. Like previous games in the series, it's a squad-based shooter that can be played with up to three players at a time. It will share a lot of similarities with Rainbow Six Siege, including both gameplay and a few operators like Vigil and Ela.

In fact, the entire game was inspired by a Rainbow Six Siege limited game mode called Outbreak. Developers have said that you won't need to have played Siege to get the full experience, but that should give you an idea of what to expect.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Heavily hyped after it was first announced at E3 2019, Ubisoft's third confirmed PS5 game Watch Dogs: Legion was initially slated for release in March 2020. That date has come and gone, but the delay means that it will likely land on both current-gen and next gen consoles around the same time.

The slick, ray-tracing enabled trailer revealed a unique game that turns every single NPC into a potential playable character. Recruiting more people with different specialties and abilities to your cause is completely new for the series, but don't get too attached because if any of them dies they're gone for good.

WRC 9

Nacon and KT Racing's follow up to the fantastic WRC 8 racing game has been confirmed as the first in the series to launch on next-gen consoles. In fact, they're already announced that WRC 9, 10, and 11 will all be coming to the PS5, with the first hitting current-gen consoles and PC on September 3.

WRC 9 will build on what made the previous game great, with an enhanced career mode and more ways to upgrade your team. It will also feature more links to real world championship teams, as well as three new events in Japan, New Zealand, and Kenya.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

The sequel to the cult-favorite vampire RPG is coming for the PS5, via developer Hardsuit Labs and publisher Paradox Interactive. Look for players to take the role of the blood-sucking undead as they prowl the streets of modern-day Seattle.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Ubisoft's next game in the long-running Assassin's Creed game series takes it in yet another new direction. This time, the action takes place in Europe, during a fictional invasion of Britain by the Vikings. One Viking warrior finds himself caught in the endless battle between the Brotherhood of Assassins and the Templar Order.

Although the trailer above is for the Xbox Series X, Assassin's Creed Valhalla will be a multiplatform release and one of the first PS5 games to hit the market later this year.

Scarlet Nexus

This is an all-new IP from Bandai Namco that will be released for the PS5. It is a sci-fi themed RPG, set in the far future. You will play a psychic warrior recruited to defend humanity against a new threat called the Others.

Maquette

Maquette is a game that sees the player working their way through various puzzles as they progress the story forward. While Sony calls it a puzzle game, the company is quite to point out that solving puzzles isn't the only focus, as the narrative is what should hook players and keep them in. The big pitch is the recursive world, which sounds a bit confusing until you see it in action. It's like a world within a world. One thing's for certain: that world looks absolutely gorgeous.

Heavenly Bodies

Anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to get things done in a zero-gravity world will love Heavenly Bodies. It's one of those games where you use the triggers and control sticks to manipulate each of the character's arms and legs. As if those sorts of games weren't confusing enough, when you factor in that your character is floating around in outer space, things get really crazy. Even the simplest tasks look challenging, which should make for a fun experience.

Recompile

Recompile is a game that sees the player exploring, fighting, and hacking their way through a digital landscape with striking visuals that absolutely stand out from the crowd. At its core, Recompile is an exploration platformer, but it doesn't look like any other platformer out there. The world will change and reactor to the player's actions as it attempts to delete them from existence.

Worms Rumble

The Worms franchise has been around for years, and it's bringing its own special brand of craziness to the PlayStation 5 in the form of Worms Rumble. It's an arena-based 32 player game that puts a new spin on the Worms style of combat and insanity. The biggest difference between this and some of the other Worms games is that it features real-time combat, rather than turn-based. It also features three different game modes that should keep players interested.

Expected PS5 games

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

The long awaited FF7 Remake has already hit shelves in certain parts of the world, but we would love to see Cloud and company make the jump to the PlayStation 5.

The first episode of the game only covers part of the story, so it's virtually guaranteed that the rest of the story (whenever it's released) will be told on next-gen hardware. Hopefully at the very least progress from episode one will transfer over to future releases.

Battlefield 6

Battlefield 6 is a no brainer for release as a PlayStation 5 game, and indeed EA has already confirmed that it will be released in 2021 or early 2022. Even so, we're not including it in the confirmed list because the company hasn't explicitly said it's coming to the PS5 (but it will, don't worry).

With the previous two Battlefield games focusing on World Wars, the upcoming title might see a shift back to modern or futuristic combat like Battlefield 4. Either way, expect EA to commit to the same "games as a service" model used in its other popular franchises like FIFA, the Sims, and Apex Legends.

Starfield

The team behind The Elder Scrolls and Fallout take aim at a new horizon with the upcoming single player sci-fi adventure Starfield. First teased way back in 2018, all we know at this point is that it will be released for "next-gen platforms," but official announcements stop short of naming the PS5 explicitly. That said, Bethesda isn't known for doing exclusives, so it's all but guaranteed to hit the PlayStation 5 when released.

Apart from that, we know pretty much nothing about Starfield. We don't even know if it will have strong RPG elements like previous titles or be something completely different. Still, its developers have been working on it for over a decade and seem pretty excited about it, so we are too.
