Best cheap Android tablets (July 2017)

While high-end devices are generally the stars of the Android world, there is a growing emphasis on quality on a budget, and that's very visible in the tablet arena.

From companies that are willing to sacrifice profits for the sake of market share, to established players looking to improve their game in the mid-range, several companies have brought to market affordable Android tablets that are actually worth buying. Unfortunately, for every great cheap Android tablet, there are tons of poorly made, clunky, and underpowered slates out there, which can make buying tablets on a budget a pain. We're here to help.

NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1

Did you love the original NVIDIA Shield Tablet? Well, you'll probably feel just the same about the Shield Tablet K1, its direct successor. The specifications and design are pretty much the same with both tablets, aside from the addition of a rubberized surface next to the speakers and brushed metal lettering on the back of the K1.

NVIDIA also removed the stylus holder on the K1, which brings us to our next point – the stylus is gone! So are the charging cable and wall adaptor. The big news here is that NVIDIA is trying to cut costs, and they did just that by not including a stylus or charger. With that said, this tablet is now only $200, which makes it not only one of the best Android tablets out there, but also one of the most affordable.

Amazon Fire 7 and Fire HD 8

Amazon recently refreshed its two popular, and budget-priced, Fire tablets, both of which use the company's Fire OS, which is based on Android.  The Amazon Fire 7 is thinner and lighter than the original model, and includes a 7-inch 1,024 x 600 IPS display. Inside, it has an unnamed quad-core 1.3 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, a VGA front-facing camera and a 2 MP rear camera. The battery life for the new Fire 7 has been upgraded from 7 hours to 8 hours on a single charge. It also has dual-band Wi-Fi hardware for the first time. You can purchase the tablet in black, yellow, blue or red colors.

The Amazon Fire 7 starts at the near rock-bottom price of $49.99 with 8 GB of onboard storage and "special offers" that appear on the tablet's launch screen. You can also get the tablet for $69.99 with 16 GB of storage and "special offers". Both versions have a microSD card slot for adding even more storage. You can get rid of those ads on the launch screen if you pay $15 more for either model.

The new version of the Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet has an 8-inch 1,280 x 800 display, 1.5 GB of RAM, and up to 12 hours of battery life. It shares the same processor, cameras, Wi-Fi hardware and color options with the smaller Fire 7. Prices begin at $79.99 with 16 GB of onboard storage and "special offers", or $109.99 with 32 GB of storage and "special offers".  Again, you can purchase the tablet without those pesky Amazon ads for an additional $15.

You also have the option to buy the "Kids Edition" of both tablets if you want to give one to your children, or friends with kids. They both include a tough "kid proof" case, a two-year "worry-free guarantee" and free access to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, which offers kids access to 15,000 curated books, videos, educational apps, and games, along with parental controls and other content. The Fire 7 Kids Edition, with 16 GB of storage, is priced at $99.99, while the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition, with 32 GB of storage, costs $129.99. Thankfully, neither comes with "special offers".

Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 8

The 8-inch version of the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 costs just $169.99 and packs in some solid hardware specs. The design of the tablet is similar to other Android-based Yoga tablets from Lenovo. It includes a unique kickstand that can be popped out from the bottom. It has several different modes, including the typical standing and tilting configurations for hands-free operations, plus it has a hole in the middle that allows the tablet to be placed on a hanger.
The tablet comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow pre-installed, with an 8-inch 1,280 x 800 display. Inside, there's a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8009 processor running at 1.3 GHz, along with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, with a microSD card slot to add up to 128 GB of additional storage. The 8 MP camera is placed on the bottom next to the kickstand and can be rotated 180 degrees so you can use it as both your rear and your front-facing camera. It also supports a few gesture controls, such as a way for the owner to simply open and close their hand in front of the camera for it to take a picture without the need to touch the display.
The Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 8 also has dual front-facing speakers for a better audio experience out of the box, with support for Dolby Atmos. Finally, the battery life for this 1.03 pound tablet is supposed to last up to 20 hours.

Lenovo Tab 2 A10

If you are looking for a tablet with a big 10.1-inch display on the cheap, you might want to look into the Lenovo Tab 2 A10.  The 1,920 x 1,200 LCD screen is perhaps the most impressive thing about this $199 tablet, but owners looking for solid hardware specs might want to look elsewhere.
Inside, the 1.1 pound tablet has an 1.5 GHz MediaTek MT 8165 quad-core processor, along with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. Unfortunately, it comes with the older Android 4.4 installed, but you should be able to update it to Android 5.0 Lollipop with a free software download. It also has a 8 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front facing camera. The battery life is only about average, with up to 10 hours on a single charge. In terms of audio support, the Lenovo Tab 2 A10 has a multi-speaker Sound Bar with support for Dolby Atmos, which is supposed to offer solid sound from both its speakers as well as for people using headphones.
