How do I get rid of ugly smileys in my text messages?

I don't know what I did but for some reason, I can't seem to switch it back. In my text messages, if I type out a face like :) or :(, a really ugly emoji comes up instead. I had this issue with other phones where the android emoji would replace faces like :) and :( but I didn't have to deal with that on this phone until recently. What did I do? And how can I change it back?
