Given that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is quickly approaching the two month mark from when it was first made available to Nexus devices, customers using devices made by other OEMs are no doubt wondering when the gooey goodness will be melting with their mobile.
Some may recall that, much like with Lollipop last year, LG quickly released the new OS build to G4 users in Poland, a country which often sees itself serving as a test market for this kind of thing. Soon after Korean variants started to get 6.0. Now it seems the time is finally at hand for Europe-at-large to munch on Marshmallow, though sadly not all of it.
According to users on reddit, the update is being distributed via LG Bridge, the Korean company's PC companion software. The file size is approximately 1.55GB. User 365365, via a German forum, found a list of devices currently eligible for the update. In the time since the original posting however, s/he has added the following note, that [s/he is] "getting mixed answers, post might be just completly wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯". LG itself has an official site dedicated to detailing the changes brought on by Marshmallow, which can be viewed here. Some of the more noticeable ones include:
Knock Code is to be updated to offer a better experience for the latest OS. You must now have at least 6 taps and use 3 different quarters in your knock code. To unlock the screen, the knock code for the current user can only be used.
App permissions have been changed. You can allow or deny permissions for an app to access certain features from other apps.
After you install an app and open it, pop-ups may show and you may be asked to give permissions to an app for certain features. You must give permissions to use the app.
You can decide whether or not to give permissions.
Select Don't ask again to not be asked twice when you decide not to give permissions.
You can change these permissions later in Settings > General > Apps > Permissions.
Silent mode has been added to the sound profile.
You can silence the phone in the notification panel or in the volume panel that shows when you press the Volume keys.
You can also silence the phone in Settings > Sound & notification.
Before, you had to use Interruptions to silence the phone.
Now, it can be done with just one or two taps.Interruptions has been renamed to Do not disturb.
With this, you can schedule downtimes to not be disturbed by notifications from some or all apps.
Alarms will sound or vibrate when Do not disturb is set to Priority only. Alarms will be silenced when Do not disturb is set to Total silence.
Allow peeking has been added to Settings so that you can now see notifications at the top of the screen and have none of them block the screen.
You can allow peeking in Settings > General > Apps.
QMemo+ in the notification panel has been renamed to Capture+.
QMemo+ is just the same as before.
For the full list of features and detailed descriptions, we recommend visiting LG's website and familiarizing yourself with everything.
Wrap Up
There is some talk on reddit that the updates are only hitting unlocked devices, thus it may be some time yet before carrier variants receive Marshmallow. Likewise, there seem to be a number of countries in Europe that haven't received the update yet; at the moment it's unclear as to if LG will be distributing it to all territories or if the roll-out will be in stages. We will update this story accordingly as we learn more information.
At the very least, LG has once again managed to get a new Android OS build out before just about all of its rivals. Those interested in the other flagship of 2015, the V10, might be somewhat saddened to note that the Korean OEM isn't planning to update said device until next year, no doubt a result of the unique situation related to the second display.
Let us know if you've received Marshmallow on your G4 yet, and if you have, what your initial impressions are.
