Some Galaxy Note 8’s are freezing when trying to open apps

We've seen an influx of premium Android phones in the past month or so with the likes of the Google Pixel 2Huawei Mate 10, LG V30 and Galaxy Note 8. As with the release of any new phones, issues tend to surface in the early days of their launch — something that Google has been feeling the full force of recently.

But Samsung's latest flagship hasn't escaped complaints. According to comments on the US Samsung Community page (via Android Police), the Galaxy Note 8 is freezing when users try to open certain apps.

Editor's Pick

The person who began the thread suggested that this was related to calling, but there are dozens of responses suggesting that the freezing can occur in many circumstances. The majority of these suggest the Contacts app is usually involved, however,  so the bug may lie somewhere there.

By the looks of things, it doesn't matter which carrier a person is with or which Note 8 variant they have. What's more, uninstalling apps, clearing the cache and factory resets don't provide a long-term solution to the problem.

As far as a fix goes, you can temporarily get your Note 8 up and running again by doing a hard reset, but it's a mighty inconvenient to have your phone completely disabled just when trying to do something like make a call.

A Samsung Mod has reached out to say that you can contact your regional Samsung support to arrange an "evaluation and repair," if necessary. You can call 1-800-726-7864 for US devices, or go here for non-US devices. Alternatively, hit up the dedicated community page to report the issue yourself.

Google Pixel Visual Core support postponed until Android 8.1 Dev Preview 2

It was recently revealed that Google had snuck an octa-core chip into the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL specifically to help with photography processing. The is called the Pixel Visual Core and it's Google's first SoC, but it's speculated that it wasn't quite finished at the time of the Pixel 2's release, resulting in it being disabled by default.

Google said Pixel 2 owners would have the option to enable the Pixel Visual Core once the Android 8.1 Developer Preview arrived; however, that landed last week without the promised support.

Editor's Pick

This was pointed out by Ars Technica's Ron Amadeo on Twitter, who subsequently directed his followers to the newly updated Android 8.1 Release Notes page. There, Google confirmed that the Pixel Visual Core now won't be enabled until the Developer Preview 2 (apparently).

Thankfully, it seems you won't have long to wait for this, as Google also says that it should land in November. Still, it's a disappointment for those who wanted to check out an early version of it right now, and we don't know exactly why there has been a delay (presumably, it's still in an unfinished state).

The Pixel Visual Core chip is said to be able to improve the effects of HDR+, as well as make it more power efficient, while it has implications for machine learning that may be taken advantage of in future also. Hopefully, we'll see it when the next Preview drops later this month.

South Park: Phone Destroyer will take out your handset on November 9

Update (10/31): Ubisoft has now confirmed that South Park: Phone Destroyer will launch worldwide on November 9 for Android and iOS. You can pre-register for the game's launch at its official website and, when it is released, you will be able to snap an exclusive ManBearBig outfit for your avatar (because of course you can).

Original story (6/12): The kids of South Park have been making us both laugh and squirm on TV, in the movies and via console and PC games, for over 20 years. Now they are going to invade your handset and make you respect their "authoritah" later this year in Ubisoft's newly announced South Park: Phone Destroyer.

The game itself is being developed by Ubisoft's RedLynx studio, and while it shares some of the characters from the publisher's last South Park console and PC game, The Stick of Truth, it is a stand-alone title. The free-to-play game is in the collectible card strategy game genre. Players will assemble their card decks that feature their favorite South Park characters and face their opponents in PvP matches. It also has the added bonus of having South Park creators  Trey Parker and Matt Stone voicing their characters, along with other members of the TV show's voice cast.

At the moment, the game is in soft-launch mode. You can download and play an early version from the Google Play Store if you live in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. It will expand worldwide after the soft launch helps the development team fine tune the game.

Oh, and just in case you are wondering: yes, you can kill Kenny in the game.

Report: Global 4G LTE speeds stuck at a stand still

OpenSignal is back with another biannual look at the state of the world's 4G LTE networks, gathered using its crowdsourced data from close to 4 million test devices out in the wild, contributing over 50 billion measurements. As always, there's a mixed bag of results for various countries but on the whole the picture remains mostly unchanged.

Asia Pacific countries, notably South Korea and Japan, continuing to show the way with the fastest and most robust coverage around, Eastern Europe's heavy investment in infrastructure keeps them near the head of the pack, and the US remains slower than average, but with very impressive coverage for a country of its size. Which leads up to perhaps the most intriguing discovery from this latest report – global LTE speeds have hit a brick wall.

LTE grinds to a halt

According to OpenSignal's data, average global 4G LTE speeds have been mostly static since midway through 2016. Hovering between 17.5 Mbps and 16.2 Mbps over the past year or so, coming in at 16.7 Mbps at the latest country. We see similar trends for average global 3G and WiFi speeds also, with very little meaningful movement in speeds since back in 2015.

The end to the improvements in 4G LTE speeds can also been seen in the fastest networks in the world, with no country yet able to crack the 50 Mbps mark. Singapore, South Korea, Hungary, and others have seen speeds remain mostly stable for well over a year. This is likely due to countries and carriers having previously made investments in LTE-Advanced to boost speeds, but we're now in the intermediate period before the arrival of LTE-Advanced Pro and 5G to boost peak speeds further.

Editor's Pick

This change in trend suggests that leading carriers are already in need of new technologies to drive consumer speeds higher still. Unfortunately, the world's first commercial 5G networks aren't expected to come online until 2019 and 2020, and it will take considerably longer than that for global adoption to roll out. However, LTE-A Pro will likely act as a pre-5G deployment for many carriers, offering wider carrier aggregation and unlicensed spectrum support.

Although on a global scale 4G LTE speeds may not have changed significantly, countries still developing their infrastructure are struggling to maintain speeds as additional consumers come online. India's typical 4G speeds have fallen from 10 Mbps in 2015 to just 6.13 Mbps, owing to strains on capacity. Chile paints a similar picture, with a significant drop in LTE speeds over the past year but up to a 162 percent growth in 4G connections. In the longer term speeds will return to a positive trend, but it's going to require additional investments and time.

Coverage keeps improving

The report isn't all bad news for the wireless industry though. The latest wave of infrastructure investments is paying off with vastly improved 4G LTE coverage in some countries.

India, again, is an example of a country that has quickly risen from less than 50 percent availability to matching coverage leaders like the USA and Hong Kong in just a couple of years. By comparison, the UK remains well behind the curve, but is still seeing steady improvements in coverage.

The majority of OpenSignal's 77 participating countries now fall within 60 to 80 percent 4G LTE coverage, in terms of consumer use time. There's clearly still heavy reliance on 3G networks across the world, with many consumers spending 15 percent or more of their time on a 3G connection. But this reliance is steadily decreasing across the globe.

Final words

With average global 4G LTE speeds hovering in the 10 to 25 Mbps range and coverage well over 60 percent in most countries, wireless data is providing its best experience to consumers around the world so far. However, there's a growing gap between the most advanced and newly developing networks in terms of speeds.

Early 4G adopters are already looking towards next-generation LTE-A Pro and 5G networks in order to offer new peak speeds for consumers, but 5G remains years away at this point. At the developing end, infrastructure remains under strain due to the sheer number of new users online, but this will likely be alleviated in time. So although speeds may have stood still over the past twelve months or so, we will likely see average global speeds resume their upward trends in the near future, in both developed and developing networks.

For a closer look at the data and further analysis, be sure to check out OpenSignal's full report here.

Slayaway Camp devs to release Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle in Q1 2018

Slayaway Camp delivered a sumptuous mix of horror and humor when it was released on Android in June, leaving some gamers hungry for more. To coincide with Halloween, Blue Wizard Digital, the game's developer, has now announced a follow up: Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle.

Based on the details in the press release, this will be almost a direct sequel to Slayaway Camp, featuring similar mechanics and settings; the only discernible difference right now seems to be that you will play exclusively as Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees.

Editor's Pick

Players will once again slide the murderer around an isometric map, attempting to kill people with a range of weapons (or have them kill themselves while trying to escape). It will also feature the gruesome Kill Scenes in between levels which, even with the blocky characters of Slayaway Camp, were still pretty grim.

"I loved the balance of horror and humor the Blue Wizard guys brought to Slayaway Camp," said the creator of Friday the 13th. Sean S. Cunningham (75), "and I'm thrilled to see their take on Friday the 13th."

Unlike Slayaway Camp, however, Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle will be free to play — something that might worry fans of the original game. "We're sensitive to the concerns a lot of players have with free to play titles," said Blue Wizard Digital founder Jason Kapalka. "We're definitely trying to avoid the more obnoxious money-grabs. They've promised to send Jason after us if it sucks."

You can sign up for updates on the upcoming title at the link and if you want to check out Slayaway Camp, you can do so at the button below: it's currently on sale.
